Itinerary

Is this right for you? :
What to Expect

This project is perfect if you are looking to do something different during your holidays. It’s also great if you’re interested in pursuing a career in conservation, or just love the outdoors.

We specifically designed this project for teens aged 15-18, and we have a set itinerary in place and extra staff support available.

You’ll spend your short volunteering trip with passionate conservation staff, who actively protect and help the local environment everyday! The best part? You get to tap into their knowledge and experience, using it to learn more about conservation initiatives in Mexico.

You don’t need experience for this project. A willingness to help, learn and explore is all we ask of you! Within a week, you’ll receive your scuba diving qualification, so you can dive and help with underwater work. Our diving instructors will be with you throughout the training and during each dive.

So why not travel to a beautiful part of the world this year, make new friends, learn to dive and help protect our oceans?

What will I be doing? :
Typical Day

You’ll be based in La Paz, in Baja California Sur, a state in northwest Mexico. You’ll also work in surrounding areas such as Isla Espirtu Santo and Bahía de la Paz while doing internationally relevant research and conservation work.

As its name implies, this town is also referred to as the City of Peace and is known for its beautiful calm beaches and artistic style. There are plenty of outdoor adventure opportunities and stunning beaches to discover.

The main goal of this project is to protect the threatened natural resources of Baja California. We also aim to counteract the encroachment of human expansion and its effects on the surrounding environment.

In Baja California, there are several urgent issues affecting the environment, namely:

  • Pollution
  • Overfishing
  • Environmental changes due to global warming (like harmful algae blooms)

The work you do – such as collecting valuable data on marine populations – contributes directly to mitigating the impact of these problems. We also share the data we collect with local universities, to support studies and research efforts.

You’ll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad High School Special volunteers during your stay in Mexico. This is a great way to get to know your fellow volunteers, make new friends, and share experiences.

On our High School Specials, we will always try to have you share a room with at least one volunteer of the same sex and approximate age.

Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe. Your programme fees include three meals a day.
