  • Visit the cradle of Mexican folklore on a Discovery Tour with other travelers. You’ll be immersed in the culture and cuisine, and get to witness the marvels of nature while helping to preserve it.
  • You’ll start your journey in Guadalajara, a city often referred to as the pearl of the west. You’ll experience first-hand the impressive Mexican architecture and the country’s traditions before heading out to see the natural beauty in Cuyutlan. Prepare to get your hands dirty as you conserve the coast and protect the wildlife that lives there. We’ll also not forget to take you to Tequila, a city that speaks for itself!

What to Expect

If you’re the adventurous type and are looking to explore a whole new culture, then our Discovery Tour in Mexico is for you.

You’ll be immersed in the cradle of Mexican folklore in two of the most emblematic cities in Mexico. During your stay, you’ll join some of the most committed people in conservation as you preserve endangered species around the coast. This is coupled with many social activities like spectacular sunsets, a hike to Volcan de Fuego and city tours.

Our Discovery Tour in Mexico is open to travelers over the age of 18. You are required to have a decent level of fitness as you’ll be going on a hike during your stay.

You and your group will be staying in hotels for most of your stay. However, when you’re at the Conservation Project in Cuyutlan, you’ll stay in shared accommodation near the coast.

What will I be doing? :
Typical Day

Day 1 – Arrival in Guadalajara

Once you arrive in Mexico, one of our staff members will pick you up and take you straight to your accommodation while you wait for the rest of your group to arrive. Use this time to freshen up and rest from your journey. Once your whole group has arrived, you’ll receive a country and cultural introduction before heading out to a Mexican dinner. Use this time to get to know your peers and ask any questions you have.

Day 2 – Plaza Tapatia, San Juan de Dios, Tlaquepaque, pottery workshop and Mariachi dinner

You’ll start your day with a cultural visit around Guadalajara City Centre on a double-decker bus. You’ll get to see beautiful cathedrals and the picturesque Plaza Tapatia as you marvel at the amazing murals by Orozco. For lunch, you’ll explore the largest closed market in Latin America, San Juan de Dios, before eating your fill of Mexican food.

After lunch, you’ll explore the colorful town of Tlaquepaque known for its pottery. You’ll enjoy a pottery workshop and enjoy a nice dinner accompanied by the traditional Mariachi music.

Day 3 – Conservation Project in Cuyutlan

After breakfast, you’ll drive through to our Conservation Project in Cuyutlan, a small coastal town. The project supervisor will give you a rundown of the conservation work and will brief you on the tasks you’ll assist with. You’ll start off small with a biodiversity study where you’ll get to marvel at the magnificent wildlife that surrounds the area.

In the evening, you’re in for a treat. You’ll go on a night patrol where you’ll assist with the detection and relocation of sea turtle eggs in order to protect them from poachers.

Day 4 – Conservation activities and Comala

Your day will start early as you assist with tasks in El Tortugario, an ecological and wildlife protection centre in Cuyutlan. You’ll assist with the washing of sea turtles and their enclosures, feed the green iguanas and water mangrove seedlings. You can then relax around the pool or wander over to the beach.

After lunch, you’ll travel to the beautiful city of Comala. You’ll be shown around the city centre and then enjoy dinner at the traditional restaurant where you’ll enjoy the local cuisine.

Day 5 – Hike to Volcan de Fuego and kayak in a crater lake

Get ready for an active day in Mexico. After breakfast, you’ll travel to the base of Volcan de Fuego where you’ll enjoy a locally brewed coffee. Once you’ve refueled, you and your group will set off on a hike along the paths of Volcan de Fuego. You can then cool off in a crater lake as you kayak around the surrounding area.

Day 6 – Tequila City

In the morning, you’ll set out for Tequila City. You’ll be shown around the city center and learn all about the history of tequila as you tour the distilleries and Blue Agave Fields.

After a long day out, you’ll head back to Guadalajara where you and your group will prepare for your farewell dinner.

Day 7 – Departure from Guadalajara

Depending on what time your flight leaves, you can use your free time to do your final bit of exploring and souvenir shopping. Use this time to exchange contact information with your group. You might even make plans to meet up in the future!

Food and accommodation

You’ll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad travelers during your stay in Mexico. This is a great way to get to know each other, share experiences, and explore your surroundings during your free time together.

The accommodation is safe, clean, and comfortable. Your program fees include three meals a day.
