Overview

About Volunteers Without Borders: Our vision and goal is to connect international volunteers with opportunities at the lowest cost possible that will provide them with the opportunity to give back to underdeveloped areas of the world that need all the help and support that they can get. Our mission is to recruit international volunteers and present them with international volunteer abroad opportunities to make a difference in developing countries in need. We offer program fees that are substantially lower than majority of other companies.

ISSUES FACING TANZANIA
One of the major problems in Tanzania is environmentally sustainable development. A majority of Tanzanians rely on wood and agricultural residues for their energy needs, which in turn cause deforestation and environmental degradation. Deforested areas destroy habitats for wildlife which lead to a decline in biodiversity and leave areas susceptible to soil erosion which greatly reduces its ability to grow new plants. Eroded soil also runs into rivers and out at sea, where it smothers sensitive corals. Each year, organized illegal timber crime is causes millions of dollar’s worth of timber revenue to be lost. Part of the problem is poor governance and rampant corruption in the forestry sector. In most major towns and cities, solid and liquid wastes are left untreated. As a result, air and water are contaminated with pollutants, which cause major health hazards for those who live in under-privileged areas. Along coastline cities or towns, few people are connected to a sewage system. The few sewage systems that exist disgorge their waste directly into the ocean, affecting marine habitats and the species that live there. In village areas, people often resort to poaching. Sometimes, this happens in retaliation to wildlife attacks which destroy crops, and hence livelihoods. Such conflicts between humans and wildlife are also straining relations between wildlife authorities and local people.

Weather and Climate

Tanzania has a tropical climate and is relatively close to the equator so the annual temperature varies only slightly. With this being said, there are regional variations depending on the topography. In the Northern region (Mt. Kilimanjaro area); called the highlands, temperatures vary between 10 – 20 °C / 50 – 68 °F during the winter and summer seasons respectively. For the remainder of the country, the temperatures are consistently warm and rarely fall below 20 °C / 68 °F.
